Hypochlorous on hands: what the studies show

Hypochlorous and alcohol hand rubs side by side: how they compare on hands, spores and skin, how to use them, and EQ8 DEFEND’s EN 1500 result.

Hypochlorous removed more spores than soap; alcohol barely touched them

Log reduction of C. difficile spores on hands (higher is better)

About 2.0 log is 99% removed; more than 3.5 log is over 99.9%. Six volunteers; hypochlorous at 250 to 500 ppm, used as a soak. Nerandzic et al. 2013.[11]

Mechanism

How hypochlorous attacks microbes, step by step

How hypochlorous reacts within milliseconds with the sulphur-containing parts of a microbe’s proteins and shuts down its energy supply, transport and DNA copying, and why the body makes the same molecule to fight infection.

The science

The same molecule the body makes

White blood cells called neutrophils make hypochlorous to destroy microbes they have engulfed.[6][7]

pH decides which form it takes. Below about pH 7.5 it is mostly uncharged HOCl, the form that does the germicidal work. Above it, it becomes the charged hypochlorite ion, which matters more for cleaning action.[9][10] Move the slider to see the balance shift.
